Steve Donahue and Tom Clark founded Santa Clara Valley Brewing in 2013 with the goal of “providing our friends and neighbors with a selection of fine handcrafted beers created with the highest quality ingredients.” We’d say they’re doing a pretty bang up job on that, which makes SCVB the first stop on our San Jose brewery tour!
SCVB’s Electric Tower IPA pays homage to the neighborhood’s historic San Jose Electric Light Tower of 1881, one of many so called ‘moontowers’ that illuminated nighttime cityscapes across Europe and the U.S. in the late 1800’s. It packs a heavy wallop of West Coast IPA+ness to remind you not only where you came from but where you’re going…for another beer!
Two other flagships – Peralta Porter and New Almaden Red -compliment a wide selection of experimental and one off brewskis. Check them out at 101 E. Alma St. in San Jose! CHEERS!
BJ’s Restaurants (Ticker: BJRI), a $1.2 billion publicly traded restaurant and brewery chain, is a place we want to hate but have to love. Founded in 1978 in Santa Ana, California, by a couple of deep dish pizza guys, BJ’s started brewing craft beer in 1996 (the same year they listed on NASDAQ) in Brea, SoCal. Today they operate over 150 locations. Our beer flight on deck today = Temple of Stone IPA (collaboration with Stone Brewing Company), Stout, Red Ale, and Hefe. Cheers!
When life gives you peaches, make beer!
Steelhead Brewing Company opened their first brewpub in Eugene, Oregon in 1991. We paid a visit to their other brewery in downtown Burlingame, California (opened in 1995) for a nice afternoon beer flight. Come here for the house brews, stay for the billiards!
FreeWheel Brewing Company was founded in 2012 in sunny Redwood City, California. FreeWheel partner and brewmaster Malcolm McGinnis brings English-style cask-conditioned ales to Silicon Valley including replicas of Shropshire, England’s Iron Bridge Brewery’s beerskis. Here you will find an intimate brewpub with consistently excellent session ales and equally succulent Cali-fresh food. We recommend the beer flight to sample all their hand-made (and pumped) brews and the bacon blue cheese burger with avocado!
Faultline Brewing Company is a popular spot with the locals and for happy hour, conveniently located in sunny Sunnyvale, California (home to Apple, Inc.). We came for the craftbeer. We stayed for the savory bar food!
This is out one and only visit to Los Gatos Brewing Company because SF chef Scott Youkilis and his brother bought it and are turning it into…wait for it…another brewpub! Welcome to the neighborhood – we can’t wait to see the transformation!
Welcome to Hermitage Brewing Company! Hermitage was established in 2009 when Tied House closed for biz and the brewing equipment was relocated to south 7th Street in San Jose, California. This place may be a bit off the beaten path but more than makes up for it with incredibly high quality craft beer and taproom recommendations. Check out the Maltopia Scotch Ale and Ale of the Imp! #bestbreweries
