Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Chico

We have been looking forward to our pilgrimage to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company – Beer Mecca – in Chico, California, for many years! Sierra Nevada is of course one of our all time favorite craft beers. Sierra’s legendary American Pale Ale is often times our go-to at the bar, whether New York or San Francisco or somewheres between, when it’s found on tap.

Founded in 1979 by home brewers Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi (today independently owned by Ken & Family), Sierra Nevada Brewing Company has grown to be the largest craft beer producer in America behind Yuengling and Samuel Adams. We can see why – they make truly awesome beer!

Original beer art abounds at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company purchased this shiny vessel and another just like it from a defunct German brewer for the price of scrap back in the day! It took them awhile to save up even more money to get them back in their original shape and brewing again, but they made it work!

You may ask how does Sierra Nevada brew over 1 million barrels of beer per year?! Massive fermentation tanks like these come in handy, and they are just the tip of the brewing iceberg!

One of the best parts of the beer tour at Sierra Nevada is that you get to sample many of their offerings for free! You start off with the original Pale Ale to get you in the beer tour mood and finish off in their beautiful old world bar and sample another half dozen fresh beers each in their own glassware that optimizes the aroma and experience of each taste.

Of course, even after imbibing a few free beers from the brewery tour, we try a few additional beers at Sierra’s brewpub that are only available in Chico or the Berkeley Torpedo Room. Beer flight on deck! Bigfoot (barleywine aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels), Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale (made with New Zealand hops), Beer Camp #141 Blue Baltic Porter and Knightro! We’re in Beer Heaven. Cheers!

Standing Stone Brewing Company

What a beautiful sunny day for a beer flight here at Standing Stone Brewing Company! Standing Stone occupies the historic Whittle Garage in downtown Ashland, Oregon. Ashland happens to be the #1 town to live and work as a filmmaker according to Movie Maker Magazine, and is home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival!

Ashland is absolutely gorgeous, and so is this little brewpub right in the heart of town. As for beers? All are made with 90% organic/local ingredients, including from their very own farm a mile down the road – now that is farm-to-bottle California fresh craft beer!

The Whittle Garage only cost $6K to construct in 1925 but the Amarotico family spent 100x that amount (inflation, much?!) transforming the once blank slate into its current warm, post industrial form in 1997. Serious craftsmanship abounds around the brewery. Here’s where Standing Stone makes their delicious and nutritious brewskis!

Deschutes Brewery! We are in the brewery big leagues now! Any self respecting Pacific Northwest beer quest deserves a stop in Portland, Oregon (a.k.a., Beertopia or Beervana)!

Deschutes Brewery Portland

It truly is Beer Heaven out here. Portland is home to more breweries (and strip clubs) per capita than any other American City! Seriously though, we love it here at Deschutes Brewery, located in the heart of Portland’s Pearl District. The Pearl District is a bustling hub of galleries, shops and of course brewhouses (more opening up each monty)! Oh hoppy day!

Mount Hood is featured prominently throughout Deschutes Brewery’s Portland brewpub. Here is a beautiful example of hand crafted beer art!

Oakshire Brewing

The Oregon Beer Trail continues at Oakshire Brewing, a 15 barrel brewery and public house that began in 2006 when home brewing brothers Jeff and Chris Althouse went pro. Some of the finest craft beer Eugene, Oregon has to offer can be drank at Oakshire!

Our beer flight on deck for today includes Line (Rye IPA), Ride Your Bike (Double Red Ale), Overcast Espresso Stout (an amazing breakfast beer in our experience!) and Madame Blu (bourbon barrel aged blueberry Berlinerweisse). Cheers!

Stumptown Brewery

Stumptown Brewery is brought to you by the bar genius behind Zietgeist in San Francisco. Stumptown is a fine little brewery located on the Russian River in Guerneville, Sonoma County.

We hopped into Stumptown Brewery for a beer flight between wine flights and could not be happier with Stumptown’s laid back, riverfront location and of course a few delicious house craft brewskis! The Redwoods in Stumptown’s logo represent a throwback to the ancient forest that blanketed Sonoma County before humans cut them all down (hence the name…Stumptown)!

When in Sonoma, take a break from wine tasting, with beer tasting at Stumptown Brewery! Cheers!

Beer flight on deck at Stumptown Brewery! Rat Bastard Pale Ale, Blimey the Wanker ESB (LOL!) and Bushwhacker Wheat. Our personal favorite is the Rat Bastard…you are what you drink!

Hermitage Brewing Company

Welcome to Hermitage Brewing Company! Hermitage was established in 2009 when Tied House closed for biz and the brewing equipment was relocated to south 7th Street in San Jose, California. This place may be a bit off the beaten path but more than makes up for it with incredibly high quality craft beer and taproom recommendations. Check out the Maltopia Scotch Ale and Ale of the Imp! #bestbreweries
